Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is an extremely popular aesthetic surgical procedure among women who desire enlargement or enhancement of their breasts. In this operation, synthetic breast implants are placed under the breast to increase breast size. It is important to realize that, like any artificial implant placed in the human body, breast implants do not last indefinitely, and will likely need to be replaced at some point during the patient’s lifetime. Numerous scientific studies have now documented the safety of breast implants; they do not pose an increased risk of breast cancer or any other medical condition.

The prospective breast augmentation patient faces a number of important decisions about how the surgery will be done. Dr. Muzaffar will help you make these decisions based on your anatomy and your goals for the procedure. Among these decisions are: 1) the size of the implant; 2) the type of implant to be used (silicone-filled versus saline-filled); 3) the type of incision to be used (around the areola, under the breast, or in the under-arm); and 4)whether the implant should be placed under the breast tissue or under the pectoralis muscle of the chest (subglandular or submuscular, respectively).

Breast augmentation is typically done as an outpatient procedure. However, as with any operation, there are surgical risks and potential complications, which Dr. Muzaffar will carefully review with you. There are also long-term considerations, such as the way mammograms should be done after breast augmentation and what you can expect to happen with aging after breast augmentation. Dr. Muzaffar will discuss these issues with you and help you choose a breast augmentation that is best for you.

As with other types of aesthetic surgery, it is essential for the surgeon to understand the patient’s goals and expectations for surgery. Having a good idea of how large you want your breasts to be and what shape you prefer will be very helpful in planning your breast augmentation. It is a good idea to bring in some representative photographs that illustrate the size and shape that you hope to achieve, ideally in women who have a similar body type to yours. Dr. Muzaffar can then advise you on how best to achieve your goals, or whether those goals are realistic given your anatomy.

Many different factors can affect your options for breast augmentation. Among these are the size and shape of your chest, the size and shape of the breasts, how much ptosis (“drooping” or “sagging”) of the breasts there is, any previous breast surgeries, the quality of the skin and soft tissues of the breast (stretch marks, thickness of the subcutaneous fat and breast gland), and various medical and breast conditions. Dr. Muzaffar will discuss all of these factors with you and explain how they will influence your breast augmentation options.
