Liposuction Before Surgery Instructions

  • ABSOLUTELY AVOID aspirin and aspirin-containing compounds (Anacin, Alka-Seltzer, etc) Ibuprofen (Motrin etc), Vitamin E, and smoking for 2 weeks prior to surgery and 1 week after surgery.
    • Gingko Biloba should be stopped as well, as it has been reported to cause bleeding.
    • Tylenol can be taken without any problems. Please make sure you have and have reviewed the accompanying sheet on aspirin and aspirin-related products.
  • No alcoholic beverages for 48 hours prior to or following surgery.
  • Medications may be taken the morning of the surgery with a light breakfast.
  • Wash skin in shower with Phisoderm or Hibiclenz liquid soap daily for ten minutes for one week prior to surgery.
  • Shave hair if excessive in the areas of surgery- 1 week before surgery. Do not shave within 5 days of surgery.
  • Arrange for a person to bring you, stay here during the procedure, and drive you home after the procedure.
  • Arrange for a person to stay with you overnight.
  • Start antibiotics as directed the day before surgery.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing (e.g. sweatshirt) that is easy to put on after surgery.
  • Wear slip-on shoes (no laces or ties).
  • Bring two large bath towels in with you on the day of the surgery and a snack to eat and drink after surgery. You should have additional bath towels ((and/or a plastic sheet or baby “wet sheet” for use on the carseat when you go home.
  • Consider obtaining plastic sheeting or a baby “wet sheet” for use in bed during the first post-operative week since there can be significant drainage during this time. In addition “Depends” incontinence diapers may also be worn at night to help absorb this fluid.
  • Make sure to eat a light breakfast and/or lunch the day of surgery.
